Online Frame from within an Encyclopedia Database
Introduction
The Grolier Online Help system
has been designed to give you all of the information necessary
to effectively use the powerful search engine and the many
research tools that are included in the site. Because you
are likely to be looking for something specific when you click
on the "Help" button, we have divided Help into
specific, easily navigable sections. Where relevant, sections
will link directly to the corresponding section in the Grolier
Online Tutorial, a user-friendly guide through the site's
many features.
Grolier Online offers two
new "environments" and home pages, each aimed at
supporting students of different ages and abilities. Please
note that these are not separate products; both environments
are included with any Grolier Online database license that
you purchase, and you may toggle between them freely via the
"Jump To" buttons located on the upper right-hand
side of each home page.
Grolier Online Kids has been
designed for younger students, those in grades three through
five, while Grolier Online Passport was created for older,
more sophisticated students, and adults. This new approach
continues to set Grolier Online apart from the competition,
and enables students of all ages and abilities, from reluctant
learners to over-achievers, to harness the power of Grolier
Online to meet their research needs.
Grolier
Online Kids
Because the Grolier Online
Kids environment has been designed to meet the needs of younger
researchers (students in grades three through five), its focus
is to make finding information as easy and intuitive as possible.
The ability to search
is perhaps the most important tool for any researcher. A large,
and easy to find, "Find it Fast!" search box is
located at the top center of the home page. By simply entering
a term or terms into this box and clicking "GO"
you will be searching not only all licensed Grolier Online
databases, but also a collection of magazine articles, Web
sites (created specifically for younger users), media, and
news stories, making searching simple yet powerful.
Also located on the center
of the home page, immediately below the "Find it Fast!"
search box, are other powerful research tools. These include
the interactive and comprehensive Grolier Online Atlas;
a set of seven dictionaries and
thesauri from the Houghton Mifflin Company, some
including audio pronunciations; and Advanced Search,
which gives you the ability to clarify, organize, or further
constrain a search. Again, all features are presented in a
clear, easy-to-use manner for younger, or more reluctant,
researchers.
The Grolier Online Tutorial
is located on the upper left-hand side of the home page. This
tutorial is an excellent way to become familiar with Grolier
Online's powerful, new features quickly and easily. The interactive
Flash version takes about ten minutes to play and provides
a great overview.
All of the Grolier Online
databases that you have licensed will appear on the left-hand
side of the home page just below the Tutorial. To access any
database, simply select it from the list and click on the
"Enter" button. It is also easy to return to the
Grolier Online Kids home page from within any encyclopedia
database. To do so, simply click the "Grolier Online
Kids Home" button located at the top left side of the
frame on all subsequent pages.
Located on the lower center
part of the GO Kids home page is the Feature Showcase,
a multimedia-rich interactive learning module that is generally
tied to the classroom curriculum, with links to related encyclopedia
resources.
The "Help" and "About"
buttons are located at the top, right-hand side of the home
page, along with the link to the Grolier Online Passport environment.
Both the "Help" and "About" features contain
valuable information regarding Grolier Online. The Passport
home page and environment have been created to meet the research
needs of older, more sophisticated students and adults. Together
these two environments, Grolier Online Kids and Grolier Online
Passport, create a powerful, flexible, and intuitive research
environment that will meet the needs of all of your students
and patrons.
Note that while we recommend
including both environments to get the most out of your Grolier
Online license, you can also elect to remove the link to the
Grolier Online Passport environment by contacting your Grolier
Online representative, or by using the Customizing Grolier
Online administration page.
Also located on the right-hand
side of the page, just below the "Help" and "About"
buttons is the Today Is...
feature, a daily feature highlighting
birthdays and historical events associated with each day of
the year.
NewsNow,
which appears immediately below Today Is..., is Grolier Online's
news feature for younger students. It is based exclusively
on NBK's popular NewScoops,
and will generally include three to four news stories weekly.
And finally, located on the
bottom right-hand side of the GO Kids home page is For Educators,
a resource center that has been created just for educators.
This feature includes lesson plans and other resources and
is geared toward helping you use Grolier Online as a teaching
tool, in the classroom, library, and media center.
Grolier
Online Passport
The Grolier Online Passport
environment and home page have been designed specifically
to meet the research needs of older, more sophisticated, students,
and adults. Like the Grolier Online Kids environment, its
goal is to make finding information easy, but it also includes
the powerful Web-like search tools that students have become
so used to. Additionally, the Passport environment includes
a more comprehensive collection of Web sites and current events.
Its features encourage students to further explore topics
of interest and help to promote critical thinking skills.
Of course the most important
tool for serious researchers is the ability to Search.
A large, "Find Ii Fast!" search box is located at
the top center of the home page. By simply entering a term
or terms into this box and clicking "GO" you will
be searching not only all licensed Grolier Online databases
but also a comprehensive collection of magazine articles,
Web sites, media, and news stories, making searching simple
yet incredibly powerful.
Located just to the right
of the search box are some additional, powerful research tools.
These include the interactive and comprehensive Grolier Online
Atlas;
a set of seven dictionaries and
thesauri from Houghton Mifflin, some including
audio pronunciations; and Advanced Search.
This is an instruction that includes powerful options that
let you clarify, organize, or further constrain a search.
The "Help" and "About"
buttons are also located just below the Advanced Search option.
Both of these features contain valuable information regarding
Grolier Online.
The link to the Grolier Online
Kids environment appears at the top right-hand side of the
home page. The Kids
home page and environment have been created to meet the research
needs of younger, perhaps more reluctant, researchers. Together
these two environments, Grolier Online Passport and Grolier
Online Kids, create a powerful, flexible, and intuitive research
environment that will meet the needs of all of your students
and patrons.
Note that while we recommend
including both environments to get the most out of your Grolier
Online license, you can also elect to remove the link to the
Grolier Online Kids environment by contacting your Grolier
Online representative or by using the Customizing Grolier
Online administration page.

Using
the Grolier Online Frame from within an Encyclopedia Database
If you elect to access one
of the Grolier Online encyclopedia databases that you have
licensed, which you can do by simply selecting it from the
list of databases located on the left-hand side of either
the Grolier Online Passport, or Grolier Online Kids home pages
and clicking "Enter," you will notice that a "GO"
frame appears at the top of all subsequent pages. This frame
continues to offer you access to many of the powerful research
tools that are also located on the GO home page. Features
that will continue to be present on the "GO" frame
include: The "Find It Fast!" search box, dictionaries,
the Grolier Online Atlas, and "Help."
You will notice that the "Find
It Fast!" search box now offers you two or more options.
When you enter a search term into this search box, the default
will be to search all of Grolier Online (including the articles
from the encyclopedia database that you are currently in).
You may also elect to search only the encyclopedia database
that you are currently viewing by selecting that option next
to the search box on the "GO" frame.

Introduction
Probably the most important
tool for any researcher, Search is also one of Grolier Online's
most powerful features. You will find a large, "Find
It Fast!" search box near the top of both the Grolier
Online Kids and the Grolier Online Passport home pages. By
simply entering a search term, or terms, into this box, and
clicking "GO," you will be searching not only all
of your licensed encyclopedia databases but also a comprehensive
collection of magazine articles, Web sites, media, and news
stories. Find It Fast! is always available on the Grolier
Online frame, located at the top of almost all pages, in both
the Passport and Kids environments, making search not only
simple and powerful but also easily accessible.
Searching
in the Grolier Online Passport Environment
From the Grolier Online Passport
environment, the easiest way to search is simply to enter
a term or terms into the "Find It Fast!" search
box located near the top of the home page, and also found
on the frame from most other pages within the Passport environment
(exceptions are limited to items such as additional Grolier
Online feature content and media pop-ups). You may type in
a single term, multiple terms, or multiple terms separated
by Boolean operators (and, not, or). The defaults when using
the "Find It Fast!" search box are full-text with
stemming on, and the results are ordered by relevance.
Additionally, when searching
from the "GO" frame you will be given the option
to search "All Grolier Online," "This Encyclopedia
Only," and, when available, any other collections included
in some Grolier Online encyclopedia databases. The default
will be to search "All Grolier Online."
Once you have entered your
term(s) and clicked "GO," or pressed "Enter,"
Grolier Online's powerful search engine will search not only
your licensed encyclopedia database collection but also a
comprehensive collection of magazine articles, Web sites,
media, and news stories, all of which have been editorially
selected for age and content appropriateness.
The search results page will
automatically open to the encyclopedia articles tab/page,
with any other relevant tabs (for items found in Web sites,
media, news feature stories, and magazines) located across
the top of the page. Note that tabs will appear only for those
items that yielded at least one search result. You can quickly
switch from viewing the encyclopedia article results to any
other type of result by simply selecting the tab in which
you are interested.
On the encyclopedia articles
search results page, a Key, or Legend, will appear on the
left-hand side of the page. It will include only those encyclopedia
databases in which the search term(s) were found and will
list the number of items found in each database.
Clicking on the encyclopedia
database name in the legend will cause the search result set
to be filtered to include only articles from that encyclopedia
database. And, once a search result set has been filtered,
an option to display all search results will appear at the
top of the legend. Selecting it will refresh the search results
page to again list all encyclopedia articles in which the
search term(s) were found.
The ability to "Search
the Search results" is located at the bottom of this
key. Should you wish to narrow your search, simply enter an
additional search term or terms into this box and click "GO"
or press "Enter."
The number of search results
found is displayed toward the top center portion of the page.
You can use either the page numbers or the "Next"
and "Previous" links to quickly move through the
list of results.
The search results themselves
will be listed in the center portion of the search results
page. The article's title will be included, followed by a
brief abstract. Below each entry you will see the words "More
Like This." This option is valuable if you identify a
search result that you feel meets your needs well. Selecting
this option from beneath the search result you think best
meets your needs will cause the search engine to conduct a
new search using that article to find other similar results.
If your search does not yield
many results, say five or less, the search engine will prompt
you with a "Did You Mean?" question and will suggest
some alternatives. This is particularly helpful in resolving
spelling problems. If you see an appropriate alternative in
the list, simply select it and your search will run using
the new term.
If your search term(s) were
found in Grolier Online's Web site collection, this tab will
appear at the top of the search results page. Simply select
this tab to access these results. The sites' titles and brief
abstracts will appear. Simply click on a title to access that
Web site.
Grolier Online maintains two
separate Web site collections, one especially for younger
students, accessed only via searches conducted from the GO
Kids environment, and a more comprehensive collection for
older students and adults, which is searchable only from the
Grolier Online Passport environment. Both collections have
been carefully selected for appropriate, and editorially accurate,
information.
If your search term(s) were
found in Grolier Online's searchable media collection, this
tab will appear at the top of the search results page. To
access it, simply click on the tab located at the top center
portion of the search results page.
On the media search results
page, a Key, or Legend, will appear on the left-hand side
of the page. It will include only those media types in which
the search term(s) were found and will list the number of
items found under each type. Clicking on a type from the legend
will cause the search result set to be filtered to include
only that type of media. Once a search result set has been
filtered by type, an option to display all search results
will appear at the top of the legend. Selecting it will refresh
the search results page to again include all media in which
the search term(s) were found.
If your search term(s) were
found in Grolier Online's News Feature Stories collection,
this tab will appear at the top of the search results page.
To access these items, simply click on the tab located at
the top center portion of the search results page. By default,
your search results will be sorted by relevancy. To order
the search results by date (in reverse chronological order),
simply select the "Sort by Date" button from the
left-hand side of the search results. To revert to sorting
by relevance simply select the "Sort by Relevance"
button, also located on the left-hand side of the results
page.
If your search term(s) were
found in Grolier Online's magazine collection, this tab will
appear at the top of the search results page. To access these
items, simply click on the tab located at the top center portion
of the search results page.
Grolier Online maintains two
separate magazine collections, one especially for younger
students, accessed only via searches conducted from the GO
Kids environment, and a more comprehensive collection for
older students and adults, which is searchable only from the
Grolier Online Passport environment. Grolier Online's magazine
articles are furnished under license with EBSCO Content Solutions.
To learn more about these collections, click on the "About
Magazines" link located on the left-hand side of the
Magazines search results page.
Searching
the Grolier Online Kids Environment
From the Grolier Online Kids
environment, the easiest way to search is simply to enter
a term or terms into the "Find It Fast!" search
box located near the top of the home page, and also on the
frame from most other pages within the Kids environment (exceptions
are limited to items such as additional Grolier Online feature
content, and media pop-ups). You may type in a single term,
multiple terms, or multiple terms separated by Boolean operators
(and, not, or). The defaults, when using the "Find It
Fast!" search box are full-text with stemming on, and
results ordered by relevance.
Additionally, when searching
from the "GO" frame you will be given the option
to search "All Grolier Online," "This Encyclopedia
Only," and, when available, any other collections included
in some Grolier Online encyclopedia databases. The default
will be to search "All Grolier Online."
Once you have entered your
term(s) and clicked "GO," or pressed "Enter,"
Grolier Online's powerful search engine will search not only
your licensed encyclopedia database collection but also a
comprehensive collection of magazine articles, Web sites,
media, and news stories, all of which have been editorially
selected for age and content appropriateness.
The search results page will
automatically open to the encyclopedia article's tab/page,
with any other relevant tabs (for items found in Web sites,
media, news feature stories, and magazines), located across
the top of the page. Note that tabs will appear only for those
items that yielded at least one search result.
On the encyclopedia articles
search results page, an Encyclopedia Key will appear on the
left-hand side of the page. It will include only those encyclopedia
databases in which your search term(s) were found and will
list the number of items found in each database.
Clicking on the encyclopedia
database name in the key will cause the search result set
to be filtered to include only articles from that encyclopedia
database. And, once a search result set has been filtered,
an option to display all search results will appear at the
top of the Key. Selecting it will refresh the search results
page to again list all encyclopedia articles in which the
search term(s) were found.
The ability to "Search
the Search results" is located at the bottom of this
Key. Should you wish to narrow your search, simply enter an
additional search term or terms into this box and click "GO"
or "Enter."
Please note that if you subscribe
to Encyclopedia Americana, these search results will
be segregated in the Grolier Online Kids environment. You
will see a link on the upper right-hand portion of the search
results page that says, "For More Advanced Results: Encyclopedia
Americana." Simply select this link to display results
found from this encyclopedia database. Because this content
is more advanced and can easily overwhelm younger students,
it has been included separately.
The number of search results
found is included toward the top center portion of the page.
You can use either the page numbers or "Next" and
"Previous" links to quickly move through the list
of results.
If you see an appropriate alternative in
the list, simply select it and your search will be run using
the new term.
If your search term(s) were
found in Grolier Online's Web site collection, this tab will
appear at the top of the search results page. Simply select
this tab to access these results. The sites' titles and brief
abstracts will appear. Simply click on a title to access that
Web site.
Grolier Online maintains two
separate Web site collections, one especially for younger
students (accessed only via searches conducted from the GO
Kids environment) and a more comprehensive collection for
older students and adults. Both collections have been carefully
selected for appropriate, and editorially accurate, information.
By default, results from the younger collection will be displayed
when you do a search from the Grolier Online Kids environment.
However, a link to the more advanced collection also will
appear at the top right-hand side of the Web site's search
results page. To access relevant results from this collection,
simply click on the "For more advanced Web sites"
link. To return to results from the younger collection, simply
click on the "Return to Web sites for younger readers"
link.
If your search term(s) were
found in Grolier Online's searchable media collection, this
tab will appear at the top of the search results page. To
access it, simply click on the tab located at the top center
portion of the search results page.
On the media search results
page, a Media Key will appear on the left-hand side of the
page. It will include only those media types in which the
search term(s) were found and will list the number of items
found under each type. Clicking on a type from the Media Key
will cause the search result set to be filtered to include
only that type of media. Once a search result set has been
filtered by type, an option to display all search results
will appear at the top of the key. Selecting it will refresh
the search results page to again include all Media in which
the search term(s) were found.
If your search term(s) were

by relevance simply select the "Sort by Relevance"
button, also located on the left-hand side of the results
page.
If your search term(s) were
found in Grolier Online's magazine collection, this tab will
appear at the top of the search results page. To access these
items, simply click on the tab located at the top center portion
of the search results page.
Grolier Online maintains two

Advanced
Search in Grolier Online Passport
Available both from the Grolier
Online Passport home page, and also from any search result
page within the Grolier Online Passport environment, the Advanced
Search feature is meant to be used to help further refine
or limit a search. There are several options available from
Advanced Search:
- The ability to limit your search to "Titles
Only." By default Grolier Online's search engine searches
the full text of all documents to find your search terms.
If you wish to limit your search to "Titles Only"
you will need to set this option from the Advanced Search
page.
- The Advanced Search page also enables you to
use the "and," "or," and "not"
Boolean operators quickly and efficiently. Simply enter
your search terms into the appropriate boxes on the Advanced
Search page. You may also further refine your "and"
search by specifying that the terms must also appear in
the same paragraph, sentence, or within a specified number
of words.
- Finally, you may also enter or add an exact phrase
to your search query on the Advanced Search page.
Please note that these options
will apply to all of the document types that are searched
within Grolier Online, with the exception of magazine articles.
Because our magazine articles are licensed from EBSCO, Grolier
Online is unable to apply the features of limiting results
to the same sentence or paragraph, or by word count. All other
Advanced Search options will apply.
Advanced

Available both from the Grolier
Online Kids home page, and also from any search result page
within the Grolier Online Kids environment, the Advanced Search
feature is meant to be used to help further refine or limit
a search. There are several options available from Advanced
Search:
- The ability to limit your search to "Titles
Only." By default Grolier Online's search engine searches
the full text of all documents to find your search terms.
If you wish to limit your search to "Titles Only"
you will need to set this option from the Advanced Search
page.
- The Advanced Search page also enables you to
use the "and," "or," and "not"
Boolean operators quickly and efficiently. Simply enter
your search terms into the appropriate boxes on the Advanced
Search page.
Using
the Encyclopedia Databases
While many new features have
been added to Grolier Online Version 2.0, accessing your licensed
databases from the GO home page (either Grolier Online Passport
or Grolier Online Kids) is simple and straightforward. All
licensed encyclopedia databases will appear on the left-hand
side of either home page. Simply select a database to enter
it.
Your encyclopedia databases
will still function in exactly the same way, with one exception.
All simple searches are now done from the frame at the top
of each page. By default a simple search will search all of
Grolier Online. You can, however, set the default to include
only items from the database that you currently have open
by simply selecting the "Search this encyclopedia only"
option located immediately next to the search box on the Grolier
Online frame.
Tutorial
Located at the upper left-hand
side of both the Grolier Online Passport and the Grolier Online
Kids home pages, the Grolier Online Tutorial provides a good,
basic, ten-minute introduction to Grolier Online's features
and environments. While you must have Flash installed in order
to play the movie version, HTML and PDF versions also are
available for viewing and printing.
The Flash version includes
standard controls such as pause, next section, previous section,
and stop, as well as a Table of Contents, which provides quick
navigation to specific sections of interest.

Map Features
The Atlas contains more than
1,400 maps, hundreds of photos, and thousands of links to
related articles within the Grolier Online environment.
The Atlas can be accessed
via a number of routes. From the GO Passport Home screen,
click on the "Atlas" link in the upper-right section.
From the GO Kids Home screen, click on the button labeled
"Atlas" just beneath the search box. From any screen
within the site, a link to the Atlas appears centered below
the "Search" box at the top of the screen. And finally,
clicking on any map link or map thumbnail image anywhere in
the site generates that map within the Atlas screen frame.
Whenever the Atlas is accessed,
it will appear as a pop-up window with a complement of browser
features.
The
Atlas Home Screen
The Atlas Home screen displays
a large map of the world. Above the map are a number of links
and the "Map Search" box. Below the map are links
to articles on "World" in various Grolier Online
encyclopedias. The "Close" link at the center-bottom
of the screen closes out the Atlas feature from view.
On the Atlas Home screen,
the "Geopolitical" link appears in white, which
indicates that the map being viewed shows geographical and/or
political entities. Clicking on "Thematic" brings
up the map titled "World, agriculture," in which
various areas are tinted in accordance with the color key
to the lower-left of the map. "World, agriculture"
represents the first of 13 alphabetic categories of thematic
maps. Clicking on "Exploration" generates a map
of the routes of early explorers who circumnavigated the world.
Clicking on any explorer on the bulleted list generates a
world map showing the route of that explorer only.
Also on the Atlas Home screen
are links to the Global Distances finder and the Help feature,
both located below the "Map Search" box
Map
Search
On every screen in the Atlas,
a "Map Search" box appears in the upper-right corner.
To conduct a search, type the desired term into the box and
click the "GO" button. This will generate Map Results,
a screen on which the appropriate maps are listed in the left
column according to relevance and labeled "Geopolitical,"
"Historical," "Thematic," or "Exploration."
To limit the search results to geopolitical, historical, thematic,
or exploration maps, go to the box at right, labeled "Narrow
map results by type," click on the arrow, and make the
appropriate selection from the drop-down list.
Further down in the yellow
tinted panel is the heading "Narrow map results by region,"
beneath which appears a breakdown of regions (continents,
oceans, and so on) in which the search term appears. The number
that appears after the region name refers to the specific
number of maps in that region that contain the search term.
Clicking on the region name generates a list of those maps
in the main "Map Results" column at left.
On all Map Results screens,
clicking on any map title in the "Map Results" column
brings up the corresponding map with the search term highlighted
in yellow. Clicking on the "Atlas Home" link in
the tool bar brings up the Atlas Home screen.

maps of the world, the continents, every country, every U.S.
and Australian state, every Canadian province, many regions,
the oceans, scores of cities, and hundreds of specialized
historical, thematic, and exploration maps. All maps include
clearly labeled links to encyclopedia articles below the map
to the left. Below each map to the right is a link that generates
a printer-friendly version of the map.
Geopolitical maps contain
"hot-spotted" labels, which, when clicked, either
generate the map whose title is the label or produce an article
(or a list of links to multiple articles) on the subject.
When the label serves as a map link, users can apply this
feature to drill down from, for example, a very general map
(such as "World") to a continent ("North America"),
country ("United States"), state ("California"),
urban region ("Los Angeles, vicinity"), city ("Los
Angeles, metro area"), and neighborhood ("Beverly
Hills" and others)—and then back up again. At each step
of this process, the words "ZOOM OUT" appear over
the top right corner of the map, with icons to the left and
right. Clicking on the icon to the left (an arrow) generates
the previous map. Clicking on the icon to the right (an underscored
arrow) brings up the Atlas Home screen.
The other hot-spotted city
or town labels cause a pop-up box to appear with a list of
articles on the given locality, arranged according to encyclopedia.
The latitude and longitude of virtually every city or town
labeled on a geopolitical map can be determined by clicking
the "Lats/Longs" link
on the green bar. This action will generate a yellow bar which
reads, "Click on a city to see its latitude and longitude."
By doing so, the instruction statement will vanish, and the
name of the city or town with its latitude and longitude will
appear in degrees (°), minutes ('), and seconds (").
To determine the distance
between two towns or cities on the same map, click on the
"Local Distances" link in the green bar. Next, click
on two towns or cities on the map. As soon as the second label
is clicked, the distances will appear in both miles and kilometers,
and the selected towns and cities will appear highlighted
in yellow on the map.
Throughout the Atlas, the
Global Distances feature determines the distances between
hundreds of towns or cities in the world. Clicking on the
"Global Distances" link on the green bar generates
two side-by-side columns, each containing an alphabetical
list of hundreds of place names. Click on a name in each column;
the distance in miles and kilometers will appear in the tinted
bar above the boxes.
Finally, on the city maps
throughout the Atlas, many important buildings, monuments,
and other notable places are called out with a dark purple
square and a label in boldfaced print. For hundreds of these
notable places, a blue camera icon is next to the square.
Clicking on the camera icon brings up a pop-up box within
which is featured a vivid photograph of the notable place,
complete with title and descriptive caption. Click the "CLOSE"
link below the caption to close out the box.

Dictionaries
and Thesauri
Using the Dictionaries
in Grolier Online
Using the Thesauri
in Grolier Online
Using The American
Heritage® Spanish to English Dictionary, and The American
Heritage® English to Spanish Dictionary
The Dictionary icon allows
you to search and browse the contents of the following dictionaries
and thesauri from the same pop-up window:
- The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English
Language, Fourth Edition
- The American Heritage® Student Dictionary
- The American Heritage® Children's Dictionary
- The American Heritage® Spanish to English Dictionary
- The American Heritage® English to Spanish Dictionary
- Roget's II: The New Thesaurus, Third Edition
- The American Heritage® Children's Thesaurus
Using
the Dictionaries in Grolier Online
There are two ways to look
up a term in any of the dictionaries available in Grolier
Online:
- If you are using a PC and your browser is Netscape
7.0 or above or Internet Explorer 5.0 or above, you may
look up any word simply by double-clicking on the term and
then clicking the "Dictionaries" icon. The Dictionary
window will open with your chosen word already appearing
in the dialog box and its definition displayed below it.
- Alternatively, open the Dictionary window by
clicking on the "Dictionaries" icon. After you
have done so, type the term of your choice in the dialog
box and click "Look Up" to display its definition.
If the term you have specified
has no exact match in the dictionary, a list of suggested
alternatives will appear if available. This function is particularly
helpful if you do not know the exact spelling of a word.
Note: If you are accessing
the dictionaries in Grolier Online from a Macintosh workstation,
or if your browser version is below Netscape 7.0 or Internet
Explorer 5.0, you must use Method 2, above.
Browsing the Dictionaries. To browse dictionary entries alphabetically, click
"Browse," then click on a letter of the alphabet
to display a list of word ranges for that letter. Click on
a range to display a list of words, then click on a word to see its definition(s).
Pronounciations. The
American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth
Edition, The American Heritage® Spanish to English
Dictionary, and The American
Heritage® English to Spanish Dicitonary
include audio pronounciations for
all words contained in the dictionary. This feature is available
both from "Look Up" and "Browse" modes.
After locating a word and its definition, you will see a speaker
icon appearing next to the word (and just before its pronounciation).
Simply click that speaker icon to hear a word's pronounciation.
Using
the Thesauri in Grolier Online
To use either of the thesauri
in Grolier Online, click the "Dictionaries" icon
and select a thesaurus from the list. Enter a word in the
dialog box. If the term has a match, a list of related terms
will appear. If the term does not have a match in the thesaurus,
a list of suggested (dictionary) alternatives will be displayed
if available.
Additionally, in Roget's
II: The New Thesaurus, Third Edition, if a match is found,
a definition of the term entered also will appear and the
related terms will link to additional information. In The
American Heritage® Children's Thesaurus, if a match is
found, a list of related terms will appear along with an indicator
of the "best choices" and an example of each choice
used in a sentence.
Browsing the Thesauri. To browse either thesaurus alphabetically, select
a thesaurus from the main dictionaries page, and click "Browse."
Next, select a letter of the alphabet to display a list of
word ranges for that letter, and click on a range to display
a list of words within that range. In Roget's II: The New
Thesaurus, Third Edition, when you click on a word, you
will see its definition and synonyms for that word. The
American Heritage® Children's Thesaurus works slightly
differently. When you click on a word from the range in this
thesaurus, you will see synonyms described as "best choices,"
"other choices," and an example of usage in a sentence.
You can return to the main dictionary search page from
any page in the thesauri by clicking the "Look Up"
button at the top of each page.
Using
The American Heritage® Spanish to English Dictionary,
and The American Heritage® English to Spanish Dictionary
Grolier Online's dictionary
offerings include a Spanish-to-English dictionary and an English-to-Spanish
dictionary. You may utilize these dictionaries to look up
translations of English or Spanish terms.
To access either of these
dictionaries, click the "Dictionaries" icon and
select the dictionary you wish to use from the list. Type
a term into the dialog box and click "Look Up" to
see its translation(s). If the term you have specified has
no exact match, a list of suggested alternatives will appear
if available. This function is particularly helpful if you
do not know the exact spelling of a word.
Browsing the Dictionaries. To browse the dictionary entries alphabetically, click
"Browse," then click on a letter of the alphabet
to display a list of word ranges for that letter. Click on
a range to display a list of words within that range and click
on a word to see its translation(s).
Feature
Showcase
Available from either the
Grolier Online Passport or Grolier Online Kids home pages,
Feature Showcase is a visually and multimedia-rich interactive
learning module that includes interesting text, photos, videos,
and quizzes as well as additional links to related encyclopedia
resources for further, in-depth study. There are also two
versions of this feature, one available from Grolier Online
Kids and the other from the Grolier Online Passport home page.
While these versions will typically focus on the same subject
matter, the level of depth and sophistication between them
will vary.
The Grolier Online Kids version
will be closely based on the Encyclopedia Spotlight currently
available in The New Book of Knowledge and will be
appropriate for younger students, say those in grades three
through five, or for reluctant learners in older grades. The
Grolier Online Passport version will contain a more comprehensive
and in-depth version of the topic and will be suitable for
older, more sophisticated students and adults.
This feature is great for
classroom use, will be updated several times throughout the
school year, and will align with the curriculum whenever possible.
The feature will not be archived.
Flash and QuickTime, or Flash
and Windows Media Player are required to play the full multimedia
version, but a rich HTML version also is offered for those
users who do not have the appropriate players installed. When
playing this feature using Windows Media Player, the player
window can be expanded to be viewed full-screen by right-clicking
and selecting the "Full Screen" option. To revert
back, simply right-click again and deselect the "Full
Screen" option.

Other Resources
As its name implies, this
feature was created especially for educators, to provide resources
for professional development and for using Grolier Online
in the classroom, library, and media center. For Educators
includes an archive of lesson plans organized and searchable
by grade or subject, a weekly Teaching the News feature, and
a collection of useful Web links. Links to other Grolier Online
resources—the Grolier Online User's Guide, Newsletter, and
Update, as well as the Grolier Online Tutorial—are all available
from the For Educators home page.
Lesson
Plans
From the For Educators home
page, click on "Browse All Lesson Plans" to access
an archive of lesson plans, or select from the pull-down menu
to browse lesson plans by grade or subject. Lesson plans are
based on encyclopedia content. Within a lesson plan, click
the links under "Resources" to access the related
content. A selected lesson plan is featured monthly and can
be accessed by clicking its title on the For Educators home
page.
Curriculum Standards. Each lesson plan is correlated to National Curriculum
Standards. (In response to the U.S. Department of Education's
recommendation that all schools have "challenging and
clear standards of achievement and accountability for all
children," a number of professional organizations have
voluntarily created educational standards or guidelines to
be used on a national level. These include the National Council
of Teachers of English, the National Council of Teachers of
Mathematics, the National Academies of Science, the National Council for the Social Studies,
the National Center for Arts Education, and the National Center for History in the Schools, among others.) Within
a lesson plan, click the hyperlinks to find the organization
sponsoring a particular set of standards, as well as a link
to that organization's Web site, where the standards can be
viewed.
Print/E-mail. Use the "Print/E-mail" function to print
or e-mail one or more sections of a lesson plan. For example,
the Activity and other sections of the lesson plan directed
at the student can be selected and printed out for distribution
to the class. Click the "Print/E-mail" button at
the top of a lesson-plan page and follow the simple instructions
given there.
Teaching
the News
A weekly feature, Teaching
the News, creates a complete lesson plan around a selected
current events story from NewsNow. Within a lesson plan, click the link under
"Resources," or click "View story" on
the left side of the screen, to access the relevant story.
All Teaching the News lesson plans are correlated to National
Curriculum Standards and have the same "Print/E-mail"
functionality as described above.

Lesson Plans. Lesson Plans are composed of one to four elements:
- Work Sheet — A list of questions that test the
student's reading comprehension
- Let's Talk About — A
question that pertains to the feature story that may be
used to start a classroom discussion on the topic.
- Activity — This asset
generally offers a series of either multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank,
or true/false questions. The page is designed for printing.

the Lesson Plan assets, click on the "Lesson Plan"
button, and a selector window will appear with a list of all
available assets. Click on one, view the asset; click on "Back"
to return to the list, and follow this procedure until you
have examined all the Lesson Plan assets. When you are finished,
click on "Close" to exit the selector page and return
to the feature story.
Article Archive. As noted above, the Feature Stories archive is located
in the lower-left quarter of the screen. The articles are
stored according to category; the breakdown is as follows:

- Animals & Nature
- Science & Technology
- Arts & Entertainment
- Sports & Recreation
- About Kids
Within each category, the
articles are arranged in reverse chronological order, with
the most recent article appearing at the top of the list.

the title. Select a story from the archive page, and it will
populate the Feature Story page, with the current week's selections
listed to the right of the archive categories list in the
bottom-left quarter of the page. You may return to the current
week's selections by clicking on any of the titles.
NewsNow Passport—Overview

to five stories daily, Monday through Friday, drawn from
the Associated Press live news feed;
- Feature Stories — Three stories weekly on various
topics of current interest;
- International News Briefs — One paragraph synopses
of news events from around the world;
- World Newspapers — A searchable database of newspapers
from countries worldwide;

the news, featuring Editorial Opinion, Editors' Picks, and

Associated Press scrolling marquee and the NewsNow
tool bar. When in one feature, you may access the other features
of NewsNow by clicking on the corresponding button in
the toolbar.
News from the Associated Press
To access Associated Press
(AP) stories from the home page, click on the marquee located
under NewsNow. A media
pop-up window appears containing the AP story selected; other
AP stories are listed on the left of the screen and can be
accessed by clicking either their titles on the left or in
the marquee at the top of the page. To return to the Passport
splash page, click on "Close" at the bottom of the
pop-up window.
Associated Press stories are
chosen and posted each morning, Monday through Friday. If
a story of national or international importance occurs after
the initial posting, a "late-breaking" news story
may be added to the roster of AP stories. Late-breaking stories
are differentiated by their red headlines.
Feature
Stories
NewsNow will contain three to five feature stories each week.
These generally cover topics of interest in the news and may
have one or more of the following assets: a fun fact, a photo
or illustration, and a Teachers' Guide. To access a feature
story, from the Passport splash page, click on any of the
titles on the left in the NewsNow
portion of the splash page. The text of the story will cover
most of the page. In some instances there will be a shaded
box to the right containing a "Fun Fact," which
is additional information pertinent to the topic being discussed
in the displayed feature story.
Above the title of the story
is the category under which the article is classified. Categories
include Anthropology & Archaeology, Arts and Literature,
Economics & Business, Entertainment, History, Medicine,
Politics, Psychology, Religion & Philosophy, Science &
Technology, Sociology, and Sports and Recreation and correspond
to the category breakdown in the Feature Archive.
Photos. On the left side of the page the following may appear:
a photo related to the displayed story, a list of the other
current feature stories, the two to four elements of the Teachers'
Guide, and the Feature Archive. A feature story may have one
to two photos. If there is only one photo, clicking on the
thumbnail will reveal a larger version of the photo along
with its caption and credit information. In instances where
there are two photos, a "More Photos" button will
appear near the thumbnail photo, which in this case is not
active. By clicking on "More Photos" you access
a selector page from which you may choose the photo or illustration
you wish to view.
More Feature Stories. To view the week's other
features, click on the titles listed under "More Feature
Stories." As you bring each story up for review, the
remaining entries will appear on the left, and you can cycle
through the current feature stories and their related assets.
Teachers' Guides. Beneath "More Feature Stories" is a shaded
box containing the Teachers' Guide and the Feature Archive.
The Teachers' Guide may contain any of the following elements:
- Study Guide — A series of questions that test
the student's reading comprehension;
- Leading Questions — A
question related to the topic being discussed in the feature
story. It should prompt either classroom discussion or a
writing exercise;
- Activity — Exercises for the student to perform.
Usually fill-in-the-blank or multiple-choice questions,
they often involve research using Internet sites;
- Activity Answers — Answer key to the activity.
To access any of the Teachers'
Guide elements, click on the underscored link. The chosen
asset will appear in a pop-up window. The contents of the
pop-up windows can be printed.
Feature Archive. Previously published feature stories may be accessed
by clicking on "Feature Archive," located in the
shaded box on the left side of the page. Articles are arranged
by subject category. The categories are listed at the top
of the archive page and include Anthropology & Archaeology,
Arts and Literature, Economics & Business, Entertainment,
History, Medicine, Politics, Psychology, Religion & Philosophy,
Science & Technology, Sociology, and Sports and Recreation.
You may navigate to specific subjects within the archive page
by clicking on the appropriate heading at the top of the page.
Within each category the stories are arranged in reverse chronological
order, with the date after each title indicating the week
it was published. Entries with allied teachers' guides are
noted with a green apple.
To view an archived story,
click on the title and it will populate the feature story
window. You will note that the current feature stories will
be listed on the left under "More Feature Stories."
To return to the current selections, click on any of the titles.
Encyclopedia Resources. At the end of each feature story is the asset Encyclopedia
Resources, which contains lists of pertinent articles from
the Grolier Online encyclopedias included in your subscription.
To access the encyclopedia articles click on any title you
wish to view; the article with all its related assets will
appear in a pop-up window. The resultant pop-up window is
the chosen encyclopedia's environment; to return to the feature
story you must restore the NewsNow
pop-up.
International
News Desk
The International News Desk
contains an archive of short entry news briefs from the Americana
Journal. It contains news from around the world and dates
from 1999 to the present. To access the International News
Desk from the Passport splash page, click on map beneath the
"News Desk" heading. The resulting popup page will
contain "News from around the World" and "Search
the International News Briefs."
News from around the World. Each week six news briefs are chosen for the International
News Desk page. The default story is the one deemed most important
by the NewsNow editorial
staff. Each story is from a specific continent; these include
Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North
America,
and South America. To access the other five briefs, click on any of
the continent headings on the map. A new short-entry news
article will populate the area beneath the map. You may view
all six news briefs by clicking on the various continents.
Search the International
News Desk. To search the archive of short-entry news stories,
utilize the search tool that occupies the right side of the
International News Desk page. The database can be searched
by country or international organization name and date/date
range utilizing the drop menus provided. The search can be
further refined by inserting a term in the "full text"
box. You can search on each element individually or combine
them.
The search results vary depending
on the search pattern utilized. Search on one country with
no date or full text constraints and the results will come
back with all the blurbs for that country from 1999 to the
present arranged in reverse chronological order. Two icons
will appear beneath the country name—"Flags" and
"Maps." Click the "Flag" icon to view
the nation's flag and an informative caption. Clicking on
the "Maps" icon will yield a political map of the
country.
Searching on a date or date
range alone will yield a search result that displays the blurbs
in alphabetical order by country and in reverse chronological
order within country. Beneath each country name there is a
"Flag" and "Map" icon. You may search
on a single date by specifying month, day, and year in the
"from" column. Note that when you enter a date range,
the date specified in "from" automatically populates
"to." If you wish to create a date range, you must
change the date in "to."
If the search is country-driven,
you will note that the dates on the search results page are
hot links; click on one and it will take you to all the blurbs
pertaining to that date arranged in alphabetical order by
country. If the search is date driven, you will note that
the country names on the search result page are hot links;
click on one and it will give you all the blurbs pertaining
to that country.
Search results are presented
with 25 entries per page. If there are more than 25 entries
you may access the other pages by clicking on "Next"
at the bottom of the search results page. Click on "Close"
at the bottom of the search results page and it will return
you to the Passport splash page. If you wish to return to
the International News Desk page to perform more searches
you can click on the browser "Back" button or the
"International News Desk" button in the NewsNow
toolbar.
World
Newspapers
NewsNow offers a searchable database of URL addresses for
newspapers around the world. To access the database from the
Passport splash page, click on "World Newspapers."
A search page with a drop-down menu of countries and international
organizations will appear. Choose a country or organization
and click "GO"; a search results page will appear.
It will contain links to five major U.S. sources (Associated
Press, CNN, New York Times, Wall Street Journal,
Washington Post), which appear in a shaded box on the
left of the page, and one or more local sources in the center
of the page. Each link contains the name of the news outlet,
its URL address, the frequency of its publication, the type
of outlet it is (general interest, business, and so on), and
the language or languages of the publication. Click on the
news outlet's title and you will be taken directly to the
news site.
After viewing the site, if
you wish to exit NewsNow,
click on the word "Close" in the Grolier Online
Passport banner and you will return to the Passport splash
page. If you wish to return to NewsNow,
click on the word "Back." This will return you to
the search results page. From there you can navigate through
NewsNow using the toolbar
or return to the World Newspapers search page by hitting your
browser's "back" button.
From
the Editor's Desk
From the Editor's Desk is the section of NewsNow
that takes a deeper look at the news. It contains three different
elements, all of which possess associated lesson plans:
- Pro/Con — A debate format that takes topics of
interest in the news and offers opposing viewpoints on the
topic;
- Editors' Pick — An essay on a topic of interest
that can be used as the starting point of a research project;
- Editorial Opinion — An
Opinion/Editorial (Op/Ed) piece that is utilized as a starting
point for the research and writing of opposing or supportive
opinions.
Each
lesson plan is coordinated to the National Curriculum Standard
of the subject area being covered in the essay. Hypertext
links within the lesson plan will give you information on
the organization sponsoring the standard as well as a link
to organization's Web site. The lesson plan offers the educator
several tools, such as vocabulary lists, guided reading questions,
and discussion topics as well as topics for essay writing
under the "Activity" heading.
Pro/Con. Pro/Con debates are
a series of essays on topics of current interest. The format
consists of a question; followed by an introduction; a Pro,
or Yes, response to the question; a Con, or No, response;
and a conclusion, or summary, of both sides of the argument.
You
will note that there is a table of contents below the debate
title. Each heading is a live link and clicking on it will
take you to that section of the document. You will also note
that both the Pro and Con essays have author links that are
live; click on the author's name and you will be directed
to a short paragraph with information about the author.
The
Encyclopedia Resources asset is located at the bottom of the
Pro/Con essay. It offers links to pertinent articles from
the Grolier Online encyclopedias included in your subscription.
Click on the titles you wish to view and you will be directed
to the appropriate article and its related assets. When you
activate an Encyclopedia Resource, you enter that encyclopedia's
environment. To return to the NewsNow
environment, you must restore the NewsNow
pop-up.
All
Pro/Con essays have an associated lesson plan, which can be
accessed by clicking on the lesson plan icon under the "Teachers'
Guide" heading. To view other Pro/Con essays, click on
"Editor's Desk Archive" to obtain a full list of
all available Pro/Con essays.
Editors'
Pick.
Essays on topics of interest, Editors' Picks represent the
starting point for research projects into allied topics. The
lesson plans associated with Editors' Picks are a key element
in this process and can be accessed by clicking the "Lesson
Plan" link under "Teachers' Guide."
The
Encyclopedia Resources asset is located at the bottom of the
Editors' Pick essay. It offers links to pertinent articles
from the Grolier Online encyclopedias included in your subscription.
Click on the titles you wish to view and you will be directed
to the appropriate article and its related assets. When you
activate an encyclopedia resource, you enter that encyclopedia's
environment. To return to the NewsNow
environment, you must restore the NewsNow
pop-up.
Editorial
Opinion.
The purpose of the Editorial Opinion is to acquaint the student
with the difference between editorial opinion and straight
news reportage. Editorial Opinion offers the student one viewpoint
on a specific topic. The lesson plan then prompts the student
to research the points made in the opinion piece and decide
if the opinion is valid. Web sites are often offered to assist
the student in this exercise. To underscore the idea that
the interpretation of facts is affected by a person's viewpoint,
the lesson plan asks the student to write an opposing Editorial
Opinion. Click on the "Lesson Plan" icon under the
"Teachers' Guide" heading to access the plan.
The
Encyclopedia Resources asset is located at the bottom of the
Editorial Opinion essay. It offers links to pertinent articles
from the Grolier Online encyclopedias included in your subscription.
Often the article will offer historical context that will
assist the student in analyzing the validity of the editorial
comment. Click on the titles you wish to view and you will
be directed to the appropriate article and its related assets.
When you activate an Encyclopedia Resource, you enter that
encyclopedia's environment. To return to the NewsNow
environment, you must restore the NewsNow
pop-up.
